Travel Insurance for Spain

Doesn’t it feel good to be headed to Spain? With incredible tapas, warm sunshine, and breathtaking architecture on the horizon, it's time to start thinking about what you need to do ahead of time to make sure your trip is stress-free. And the secret to a smooth and seamless vacation abroad is preparation.

What Do You Need When Traveling to Spain?

While some people like to go with the flow when vacationing in Spain, it's always best to have a general idea of the vacation you'd like to have. Are you planning on spending long and lazy days at the beach, indulging in some of the world's best food? Or maybe you've planned a city break and can't wait to fill your days with exciting tours discovering the history of this beautiful country.

But aside from an itinerary and a positive mindset for your exciting trip ahead, what else is needed when travelling to Spain?

Passport

Spain requires all visitors to have the required travel documents valid until 3 months after their planned departure date. This is non-negotiable. Double-check that your travel document is valid for your vacation time frame to ensure you have a smooth experience at immigration control. It's also important to note that Spain requires all travel documents to be issued no more than 10 years before your date of departure.

Visa

If you're a US citizen you're welcome to stay in Spain for up to 90 days without a visa, since the country is a part of the Schengen Agreement. If you'd like to stay in Spain beyond 90 days, you'll need to seek out the appropriate Schengen Visa for your travels. If you stay in Spain longer than the time permitted, you may be hit with an entry ban or worse.

Travel Insurance

While travel insurance isn't a mandatory requirement to enter Spain, it's highly recommended to be covered for your trip. The great thing about travel insurance is that, depending on the plan, it may cover a variety of issues that can happen to you, your baggage, or even your sporting equipment while you're away.

Travel insurance can cover things such as medical emergencies, injury, death, delayed departures and missed transport due to reasons beyond your control, lost luggage and more. And while it's not nice to think about dealing with these types of issues on your dream holiday, it's always best to be prepared.

There are countless travel nightmare stories where people end up with large hospital bills or pay a lot to change flights due to sickness. By purchasing travel protection ahead of your trip, you'll have greater peace of mind for these kinds of issues.

What Travel Insurance Do You Need for Spain?

It's important to determine what coverage you need ahead of your trip. You should ask yourself questions such as:

Are You Making a Lot of Non-Refundable Plans?

One of the most exciting elements about planning a trip to Spain is signing up for lots of exciting activities and experiences. And while we recommend seeing this country in all its glory, it's important to be mindful of the type of activities you're arranging.

If you're making costly plans that can't be refunded, you may end up losing a significant amount of money. It's always best to check the terms and conditions of all your activities ahead of time or ensure you have the appropriate travel insurance to compensate you should disaster strike.

Do You Have Any Pre-Existing Medical Conditions?

Travelers with pre-existing medical conditions should also be able to enjoy exciting trips away. But if you're visiting a European country far from home, it's important to ensure your travel insurance caters to your pre-existing medical condition. Not all travel insurance covers pre-existing medical conditions, but our Premium Plan can. Find out more about our Premium Plan.

Will You Be Renting a Car?

Driving in Spain can be overwhelming. It's important that your travel insurance provides coverage in the event of a rental car accident. Remember — accidents can happen to anyone.

While some travel insurance policies provide coverage for rental car damage, others give you the opportunity to add it on as an extra. For instance, rental car damage is included with the Premium Plan, but needs to be added to the other plans available here.

If you're renting a car for your Spanish holiday, make sure your insurance has you covered.

Note: Rental Car Damage coverage is not available to residents of Texas.

Do You Anticipate Any Trip Interruptions?

While some trip interruptions can't be anticipated ahead of time, it can be helpful to ask yourself if certain things could come up that would interrupt your travels. Not sure what's considered a covered reason for trip interruption? Check out our examples below:

  • Sickness, injury or death

  • Common carrier cancellations and delays

  • Labor strike

  • Car accident

  • Uninhabitable home

  • Uninhabitable destination

  • Host's life-threatening sickness or injury
